A disability related absence is when you are unable to attend University for reasons connected to a disability. Examples are being absent due to: having an epileptic seizure, experiencing severe migraines, experiencing significant pain and fatigue, experiencing significant anxiety, having a chronic bowel condition, having a low immune system due to a medical condition or medication, and having scheduled hospital appointments. There are many more possible examples.
If you are absent due to your disability, you can catch up on work by:
- Contacting other students, they may be able to provide support with outstanding work
- Accessing Blackboard for notes and regularly checking emails for course information
- Speak to your module leader or Academic Adviser
- Attending catch up/refresher sessions (if available)
- Exploring the Library Gateway for virtual webinars and workshops
- If you are behind on work and this is impacting their wellbeing/mental health you can contact your Student Support Adviser (SSA) via Hallam Help for information about the support you can access.
- Your SSA can advise on processes to follow if appropriate for their circumstances such as submitting a short-term extension, deferring your assessment or submitting a request for exceptional circumstances.
- Changing course groups may also be an option for you. For example if you feel unwell in the morning, moving to an afternoon session may be a suitable change.
- If you have missed a teaching session due to illness, contact your tutor directly to arrange attending another session if possible.
